The first phase of this study was aimed to determine the safety of Voltaren Gel in patients with chronic pain. A total of 240 patients, including 180 patients with moderate to severe pain (≥10% pain), who had been taking Voltaren Gel in the previous 4 weeks, were enrolled. Patients were monitored for pain intensity, inflammation, and changes in their joint structure. The study was carried out in compliance with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Peking University Health System (No. H. X.2019-08-003). All patients provided written informed consent. The patients were asked to fill in a self-administered questionnaire and to read the answers and provide their full medical history and current medications. The patients were also asked to answer the question: "What are the most common side effects of Voltaren Gel?." The study included patients with chronic pain and who had used Voltaren Gel in the previous 3 weeks. The patients were monitored for pain, inflammation, and changes in their joint structure and assessed at baseline. The pain score was measured using the modified Pain Scale (MPS), which is a brief pain scale used to assess the severity of pain in patients with chronic pain. The MPS was calculated by dividing the score by the number of pain units. The change in MPS was calculated by dividing the score by the number of pain units in the pain scale. The frequency of adverse events was also assessed at baseline and at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 months of use. All adverse events were recorded on the formulary of the data sheet. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 17.0 (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Pearson correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between the frequency of adverse events and the use of Voltaren Gel. A nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the correlation between the frequency of adverse events and the use of Voltaren Gel. The level of significance was set at 0.05.
